Quake 2 Graphics Mod And Associated Utilities
=============================================

This is a Win32/i686 binary distribution of the Quake 2 Graphics Mod and associated utilities, version 1.1.1, which is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). Please read the full terms and conditions of the GPL in "gpl.txt". The Quake 2 Graphics Mod is a modification of Quake 2, which was created by id Software (see http://www.idsoftware.com). Only executable forms of the Quake 2 Graphics Mod (Q2GM), version 1.1.0, and the Normal Map Generator (NMG) program, version 1.1.1, are provided with this release. The Normal Map Generator program uses the Developer's Image Library (DevIL) by Denton Woods and others, see http://www.imagelib.org or http://openil.sourceforge.net for information about DevIL. DevIL is licensed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Please read the full terms and conditions of the LGPL in "lgpl.txt". Compiled binaries have been built for Pentium Pro compatible based Windows systems from the source code (which is available for free from http://sourceforge.net/projects/q2graphicsmod) using the Minimalist GNU for Windows system (MinGW - see http://www.mingw.org). GLSL vertex and fragment bumpmapping shader files are also included with this release.

The goal of this modification is to improve the visual quality of the game by introducing realistic shadows and improving the lighting. Shadows are rendered using a stencil buffer technique whilst lighting has been improved by incorporating GLSL vertex and fragment shaders. The GLSL shaders perform dot3 bumpmapping including terms for the diffuse component, specular highlighting, light swamping and attenuation.

To install this mod, first make sure you have either installed the latest version of the Quake 2 demo (available for free from id's website), or that you have installed a full version of Quake 2 from a game CD. If you have installed a full version of Quake 2 from a game CD, make sure that you have applied the latest patch, which is available for free from id's website. Extract this zip file to the directory containing your Quake 2 installation making sure that the "Use folder names" option is turned on and that the "Overwrite existing files" option is turned off. Run the "NMG.exe" program that should now be located in your Quake 2 installation directory. This program is pretty straightforward. It is probably best to accept the recommended options unless you have good reason not to. To play the mod, run the "Q2GM.exe" program. If you have problems, try re-extracting this zip file with the "Overwrite existing files" option turned on (note that the normal version of Quake 2 may not work if you do this). If you still have problems, email me at the address given at the end of this document. As an alternative to the above procedure, you can extract this zip file to a new directory and then copy a "pak0.pak" file into the "baseq2" directory in the new directory. A "pak0.pak" file can be found in the "Install/Data/baseq2" directory on a Quake 2 game CD or in the "baseq2" directory of a Quake 2 installation. You will still need to run the Normal Map Generator program once there is a "pak0.pak" file in the "baseq2" directory. Note that this method is only recommended for experienced users who have a good reason for doing so.
